Bangkok – Silver Olympic boxing medalist Vorapoj Phetkoom risks losing his chance to compete in the 2012 Olympics in London over a row about a photo shoot for a gay magazine.

Vorapoj appeared on the cover and center of “Stage” magazine wearing underwear in several provocative poses. The Olympic boxer said that he did not know that “Stage” was a gay magazine when he agreed to the 15,000 baht photo shoot.
“I thought it was an honour to be invited to grace the cover of a magazine on its third anniversary,” he said on TV. “I became sceptical when I was told to wear just underpants. I protested but the team said everything was going to be okay because it would show my abdomen muscles.”
In a typically judgmental comment, Amateur Boxing Association of Thailandpresident General Thaweep Jantharo jstated Vorapoj’s appearance in the magazine was not appropriate. “We will question him. After we listen to him, we will mete out punishment.”
Resigned to the outcome, Vorapoj said, “”If I am banned from boxing for one year, I may have to give up my hope of competing in the 2012 Olympics.”
